A BILL to amend the University’s foundation
and endowment legislation was passed by State Parliament in late
2000 and proclaimed on 13 January 2001.
Most significantly, the amendments—
-
reconstitute the Senate to represent the
University and wider communities more equitably;
-
enable the Senate to select a Chancellor
from its members or externally;
-
repeal the University’s endowment acts
and permit the University to invest endowment funds prudently as
trust funds in land and other investments;
-
give the Governor a discretion whether he
acts as Visitor to the University in any matter, bringing the
University in line with the other WA public universities.
A staff member has appealed to the Full Court
of the Federal Court from the September 1999 decision of a single
judge in that Court that the certified workplace agreement relating
to the University’s academic staff was not unconstitutional or
otherwise not binding on him. A decision is awaited. If successful,
the claim would affect enterprise bargaining in the entire national
tertiary sector and beyond.
In accordance with Section 175ZE of the Electoral
Act of 1907 the University is required to report on details of
media and advertising expenditure incurred during each year. In 2000
the University spent $3,044,994.98 on these items with the following
