Capital Works
While
the new Oral Health Centre was not officially completed by the end
of 2001, the Medical and Dental Library was occupied by that stage
and the Dental Hospital opened as planned on 2 January 2002.
During
the year plans to build a new research building in Cooper Street
for occupation by Motorola were finalised and site preparation work
was completed. This necessitated the removal of some activities
to other space including the relocation of the Australian Music
Examinations Board to Park Avenue.
Design
work for the Riley Centre, which was held up at the end of 2000,
was recommenced. Tenders are to be called during the second half
of 2002. Plans for the new Chemical and Molecular Science Building
are well advanced with tenders to be called in the first half of
2002.
Preliminary
designs for two new Small Animal Facilities indicated that the budget
needs to be considerably higher than was originally envisaged. This
is largely due to a world-wide increase in the level of technical
sophistication required, which needs to be reflected in the University’s
facilities if animal research is to maintain credibility. The requirements
for this project are being reassessed.
