Usage

Words such as start or begin, use, while and I are used instead of commence, utilise, whilst and myself. Where possible, the simpler word is more desirable.

Care in the use of plurals should be taken. Although use of phrases such as:

‘staff of the University have attractive offices’

has become increasingly common, the correct construction of such a phrase is:

‘members of staff of the University have attractive offices’.

Where it is possible to make correct use of plurals and singulars without being pedantic, it is believed that University documents should set a high standard.
